‘Listener’ and programmes
Sir, — While many of us struggle to improve standards of literacy, the Prime Minister denigrates our only literary weekly periodical as “useless” for the vast majority of New Zealanders (“The Press,” February 9), evidently divulging the result of some divine revelation. Are we to take it then, that this national incapacity for critical reading includes Mr Muldoon and his colleagues along with the drop-outs of our educational system, and if so, should we submit to steamroller legislation from those who seek to limit the nation’s exposure to independent, thought by boosting safe listening and viewing at the expense of the written word? With postage rates prohibitively high and educational funding alarmingly low, do our leaders also plan restricting personal communication to word of mouth? As one of the “rather precious" correspondents. I am appalled at Mr Muldoon’s arrogance and his indifference to the need for examination of principles and issues affecting the quality of life. — Yours, etc..
PEGGY BUCHANAN. February 11, 1982.
