Taxation
Sir, — So Mr Muldoon wants us to talk about his new tax restructuring. I would like to make a plea on behalf of the single people of New Zealand. Traditionally the tax gatherer has been of the opinion that the single person can well afford to pay a higher proportion of his or her income, with only one person to support. This situation no longer applies, with many families having more than one income. A single person pays the same telephone. power TV charges, and with the increasing food and rates spiral, if he or she is lucky enough to own his or her own home or flat, the strain on the single income is now at breaking point. Two may be able to live as cheaply as one, but one certainly cannot live as
cheaply as two or three. There are no'handouts, gifts or allowances for single people. — Yours, etc.. GEORGE BUTLER. February 11, 1982.
