Superannuation benefits
Sir, — I take issue with Frank Freeman on ' superannuation. The Public Service Superannuation Scheme was an extremely worth-while institution in pre-inflation times (before the 19605) and proved to be an attraction which enabled the Public Service to enlist a good class of worker. Like the New Zealand Superannuation Scheme introduced by the last Labour Government (and subsequently demolished by Mr Muldoon), it was a true, contributory superannuation fund, unlike the present National Superannuation which is rapidly becoming an intolerable burden on the wilting New Zealand economy. Mr Freeman’s own figure of a retirement pension of $440 p.a. after 30 years service sounds unreal to me, as this would represent
a salary upon retirement of only $lOOO p.a. Perhaps Mr Freeman retired 40 years ago? — Yours, etc., R. L. PLUCK. February 9, 1982.
