The Rakaia

Sir, — I am concerned by the recent mention in your paper that the National Water and Soil Conservation Organisation is pushing the North Canterbury Catchment Board into hurrying up the hearings on the Rakaia irrigation water right applications. I commend the Catchment Board on its stand that it wishes to have all the facts before reasoned decisions are made, and hope the board does not bow to pressure to alter this. It is obvious that political pressure is being applied to rush the Catchment Board into hasty judgments. The persons behind the scenes doing the pushing are obviously concerned that the Rakaia is a possible nominee for a case for wild and scenic status. The Rakaia is too important a river for everyone for hasty decisions to be made that could affect it for the future, and it is in the public interest that time be taken to gather all the facts. — Yours, etc., MERVYN COX.
