Town hall lotteries

PA Wellington Two more lotteries, to be drawn in June and November, will be run to’ raise funds for the Wellington City Council’s Town Halt The Wellington City Council, meeting as the finance committee, has authorised the Town Clerk, Mr lan McCutcheon, to apply to the Minister of Local Government (Mr Highet) for permission to hold the lotteries. Mr McCutcheon was also authorised to approach the organiser of the Golden Kiwi lotteries, Mr Warwick Kiddle, to seek an assurance that Kiwi ticket-sellers • would not have their franchise jeopardised if they sold town hall lottery tickets too.

Sir Michael Fowler, complained during the first lottery that that threat prevented tobacconists and the like from selling tickets, which was “a great disadvantage.” Net proceeds from the first lottery were $191,000, about $40,000 more than expected.
