Biscuit union secretary
Biscuit and confectionary workers in Christchurch have elected Mr Conway Jack as secretary to succeed Mr T. A. Waters, who died in December after an illness. Mr Jack, is also the Southern area secretary of the Foodstuffs and Chemical Workers Union. He was formerly president of the Canterbury Storemen and Packers Union, and chairman of the shop delegates committee at the Aulsebrooks’ biscuit factory when Aulsebrooks announced it was to close its biscuit-mak-ing business there in 1978. Mr Jack took part in attempts by the trade unions and the Canterbury Trades Council to try to get the company to change its mind, but eventually 250 workers were made redundant.
