Inflation Bonds

Sir—Some years ago for, flexibility, I invested in bonds at the end of the fiscal December quarter, allowing an option of a repayment notice in late December or early January. I have now asked the Reserve Bank what the C.P.I. increase should be for the quarter ending December, 1981, to give me the same premium with notice

thereafter as notice before. They just could not comprehend my request. They have all the data to calculate a figure on which I could base my judgment for a before or after repayment notice, but would not do the simple calculations. Mine showed to broad figures a C.P.I. increase of 40 units favoured a December notice, a 45 unit increase favoured a January notice. I consequently opted for a December notice, the September increase having been 42 units. There are many imponderables in timing investments towards Inflation Adjusted Bonds. — Yours, etc.,
