Credit cards

Sir,—The banks are exerting pressure on the petrol stations to restrain them from imposing a recouping charge on credit-card sales. If as is claimed, this is part of the contract then it is patently a restrictive measure and therefore unjust if not illegal. That the banks can dictate to a section of the community outside their ambit is an indictment of unwarranted interference. The banks impose a 6/7c charge on cheques to recoup part of the cost of processing. By the same token businesses should be entitled to recoup the direct bank charge on card sales, though the cost of processing cards by retailers is much more, especially at peak periods, where phone calls have to be made to establish the viability of the account and writing up the details. This incident belies the image of benefactor which the banks are at pains to present in their television series. — Yours, etc., C. SMITH. December 18, 1981.
