Imperialism

Sir,—“The Economist” article is irrefutable confirmation that though the British Empire has disappeared, the old British imperialist mentality soldiers vigorously on. Its gist is how the rising tide of liberation movements in coun-

tries that in happier times (for imperialism) were “lesser breeds without the law,” may be halted. The unregenerate, imperialist mind indulges in vain daydreams of returning Iran to Western, specifically United States imperialist bondage, despite the fact that the Iranian people have for ever purged their country of the United States-installed monar-chist-fascist regime of the late Shah. The Soviet Union’s practically sympathetic alignment with the world’s liberation movements is presented in a cynically vulgarised version of the West’s own unlovely image, as in imperialist super-Power rivalry with the United States. Typical of the article’s obtuseness is its belief that Iranians want or even need the West’s protection from their northern neighbour.—Yours, etc., M. CREEL. December 5. 1981.
