Vote counting

Sir,—The gross errors reported on vote counting for the election seem to be the result of people’s careless attitude to the running of such an important event. The following are notable examples of the unacceptable standard: (1) Mistaking 5 for 3 (discrepancy of 200), (2) Over-counting 100 votes (Gisborne), (3) Blaming a calculator for poor addition (discrepancy of 800 in Rangitikei), (4) The use of a 12-year-old runner

(Sydenham). The whole matter needs investigation, just as the roll compilation did last election. — Yours, etc. J. C. and J. A. PALMER. December 3, 1981.
