Hagley Park

Sir.—During my daily stroll through North Hagley Park 1 never cease to be amazed at the transformation taking place. First, the post and rail fence along the drive to the bowling green is being moved closer so that people cannot walk on the grass down to the river without going through the turnstile (free at the moment) at the Armagh Street gates and there is no show of a pushchair or pram having access through this barricade. Also the cycle track linking Harper Avenue and the Armagh Street Bridge has been widened enough to take a large truck. The question is. does the parks and reserves department have surplus funds which have to be used before the end of the financial year or is this a way of using ratepayers’ monies unnecessarily? I am sure this money would , have been best used bn the lifeboat slipway at Sumner perhaps to save a life rather than hinder life in our lovely park. — Yours, etc.. P. J. SCOTT. November 17, 1981.
