Drainage systems
Sir,—May I ask the District Commissioner of Works the cost of the boulder pits and drainage system put in last season between Leaches Road and Scotts Cutting? As there has been no flooding or drainage trouble there over the last 50 years this job created considerable local interest. I had a look at this job two or three times a week and asked a councillor the cost; the answer was, “I don’t know, and it is not our money anyhow." In view of the fact that some parts of Leaches Road are about three years overdue for a reseal, I hope we will not be treated to another such exhibition on Highway 72 this season—Yours, etc., W. G. LOGAN, Hororata. October 30, 1981. [Mr R. D. Grant. District Commissioner of Works, replies: “Thank you for the opportunity to comment on Mr Logan’s letter. The work on State highway •72 referred to involved extensive excavation and strengthening of the road shoulder and installation of subsoil drainage to intercept groundwater which was weakening the pavement, and resulting in deformation of the road-surface water was not the problem under consideration. The cost of the work was approximately $BOOO. State highway works are carried out by Malvern County on behalf of the District Commissioner of Works and priorities are set by consultation. However, work priorities on county roads such as Leaches Road are set by the council. It is known that the council has a programme of sealing works on Leaches Road but Mr Logan should seek details of this from the County Engineer.”]
