Woman mayor
The Houston City Controller, Kathy Whitmire, has been elected the city’s first woman mayor, scoring a landslide victory over her run-off election opponent, Sheriff Jack Heard. Mrs Whitmire, aged 35, who received the backing of moderates and liberals during the campaign, joins Jane Byrne of Chicago and Dianne Feinstein of San Francisco among the few women mayors of bigger cities in the United States. Houston is the nations fourth-biggest city. with 1.1 million people.—Houston.
