Good run by Star Lady
Star Lady, an impeccablybred filly, made short work of her rivals in the Earlybirds Stakes at Addington Raceway last evening. It-was the first two-year-old event of the season in the South Island. Star Lady was a shade slow away from the second line and she still looked to have little chance of winning when Prime Hostess slipped out to a lead of about five lengths on the home turn. However, when Leicester
Tatterson pulled her wide out on the track, she came with a grand staying run to win untested by six lengths in the respectable time of 2min 40s for the 2000 m. Star Lady is raced in partnership by Mr Brian Owens, of Christchurch, and Tatterson, who trains her at Rangiora. They hold her on lease from the Brosnans, of Fernside, who have bred so many winners from the family, which from Horotane.
Star Lady is the first South Island winner . sired by Smooth Fella. She is out of Brenda Lee, a daughter of Out to Win and Nancy Lee. Prime Hostess, the only runner with race experience, set the pace and. held on for second, a head in front of Borana, which was never far off. Born to Win, forced wide for almost the whole race, did well to hold fourth, ahead of Timely Win and Ashwood King.
Supporters of favourites had a poor innings in the first three races, Ribbonwood Prince, John’s Trail and The Vandal all returning-double-figure win dividends. Gladivana driven by Murray Mcßride, paid only $5.30 when she led throughout the Le Lievre Handicap, a race for junior horsemen. Then came a.bigger boilover when Trix’s Chance, at odds of 22/1 fought on best to shade Geena in the Air New Zealand Handicap.
