Smart run by Ahbonito
Special correspondent Invercargill Ahbonito, a capable hack sprinter when in form, worked attractively' in preparation for the Visitors Handicap at the Southland meeting on Saturday, when he dashed over 600 m in 35.9 s at Invercargill yesterday morning. In the hands of trainer Roy Philpott, the Grey Gull gelding cantered over a round and had the pace on over the closing stages of his gallop, eight metres out on a firm course proper. The five-year-old, whict won twice in the early stages of his campaign last season, reeled off his closing 400 m in 24.245.
The Fluter was travelling well on the outside of his stablemate Fuso over 600 m in 38.295. They look fit for their engagements. Great Day, the 10-year-old grey veteran, worked with youthful zest in company with his two-year-old relative Great Night over 800 m in 50.685, the closing 600 m in 38.095.
Mr Charicles, which resumes in the open sprint on Saturday, cantered over a round and quickened over the closing 400 m in 26.075. He appears bright. River Town and Kopara galloped in at speed from the 600 m in 39.135, the closing 400 m in 26.35. Kopara gave his stablemate a few lengths start and finished close up.
