Greyhounds Impressive runs at Q.E. II
The Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club held sweepstake events at Queen Elizabeth Park on Monday evening and, although many of the events were run in only average times, there were still some very impressive performances. Two class one, 560 m events were held, the first being won by the promising Shady Khan. The No Pardons-Shady Havoc bitch led all the way, scoring comfortably from Wayward Pepper, which chased the winner throughout.
In the second class one contest Columbia Duke did best in a commendable 34.845, withstanding a strong challenge from Caldie’s Girl after losing a little ground on the home turn. Although he only returned a time of 35.635, Tere Tane nevertheless caught the eye in the maiden middle distance event. The Joe Winika-trained dog was clearly superior to his rivals, accelerating brilliantly to the lead from trap four and coasting to an eight-length victory. The class one sprints were
both close affairs, Wally Bee winning the first after appearing beaten on the turn. Comedy Band had swept to a clear lead and looked the winner, but the Graeme Barron-trained Wally Bee came again in great style, taking a half-length decision. Erratic running cost Kienzle Star victory in the second, losing narrowly to Linden Tree. The maiden sprints provided interesting finishes, both being won by the Yaldhurst trainer, Bill Werner. Run Fran, a bitch by Dusty
Rapid out of Little Franny, made a brilliant beginning in the first contest and although running rather wide she was far too classy in the straight, winning in a smart 20.325. This bitch looks to have great potential and should go through the classes. Werner trained the first two place-getters in the other, Ben Bendigo showing fine acceleration from a wide draw and lasting to win from a fastfinishing Superplod.
