Sports clinic success

The annual doctors’ lOkin run and sports medicine and exercise physiology symposium in Nelson, at the week-end. was the most successful since the event was inaugurated by the Nelson Clinical Society in 1979. Arthur Lydiard. the, internationally famous athletics coach was among a large panel of speakers at the symposium. Doctors came from throughout New Zealand for the 10km road race and conference which are funded by the Wellcome Trust. This year the 10km took the form of an out-and-back run on the Nelson Marathon course along the waterfront

A record of 60 runners took part in the race and all completed it in good shape including a record entry of about 10 women. The weather was mild and fine. Robert Williamson, pharmaceutical director for Wellcome. N.Z., Ltd. was among those who recorded good times in the run. Ages ranged to fit-looking runners of well over 60. At the fast end of the field, a number of young doctors returned impressively fast times. The over-all standard was high although One of the co-ordinators. Dr Peter Meffari, said the Clinical Society would prefer that no specific placings were made public.
