Buenos Aires rally
Political parties and trade unions are building a united front around the powerful Catholic Church in Argentina to oppose the military regime which is being undermined by an unprecedented economic and social crisis. The General Confederation of Labour organised a protest march to San Gaetan Cathedral in Buenos Aires which was attended by 50,000 people, causing observers to comment that the Confederation, in following the path traced by the Church, “has found a platform from which it can challenge the regime.” The demonstration was held despite the seven-year-old state of siege and without breaking the 1976 ban on all political and trade activity. — Buenos Aires.
