Bicycles popular
Riding a bicycle to work is an increasingly popular form of transport for New Zealanders, according to the 1981 census. Government figures released from a 10 -per cent population sample showed that the number of people cycling to work has increased 70 per cent to represent 4.8 per cent of the fulltime work force, reversing a downward trend shown in the 1976 census: The number of people riding motor-cycles
to work also increased by 23 per cent to 4.4 per cent of the labour force. Most people still drive motor vehicles but the number is only a 4 per cent increase on , 1976 census figures. The number, of people getting lifts or travelling in a company bus. increased by more than 14 per cent. Public transport is falling in favour. Public bus patronage dropped 14 per cent and train travel 18 per cent.
