More alcohol consumed

New Zealanders drank more alcohol in 1980 than in the previous year, according to the latest figures from the Statistics Department. Beer and wine consumption both jumped more than six million litres in total, or by about two litres a person. On average, New Zealanders drank 120 litres of beer and 13 litres of wine each in 1980. The amount of spirits drunk stayed much the same, at just over three litres a person. Although consumption has increased in the last year it is still well down on that for 1978, when the figures for beer, wine, and spirits totalled more than 446 million litres.
