Workers taxed less, says P.M.

PA Gisborne The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) has warned that tax reductions given in this year’s Budget would have to be absorbed before there could be any new tax cuts from a National government. In an address to the Chamber of Commerce in Gisborne, Mr Muldoon said: “If we are to reduce the deficit somewhat, it will be necessary to finance new policies •

for tax relief out of additional revenue. “For next year, before we start to implement any' new policies, we must absorb the greater part of the tax reduction which I gave in this year’s Budget to first homeowners for the cost of servicing their mortgages.” Mr Muldoon said that during the last six years the wage-earner had not paid a higher percentage of his income in tax, and his aftertax income had more than kept pace with rising prices.
