Primary schools’ competition
Jeffrey Brightwell and Joanna Lake carried off the principal singles titles in the Merivale Travel Canterbury primary schools’ tennis championships at Wilding Park yesterday. In the boys’ ope'h field, Brightwell, a ’ member of a prominent Canterbury sporting family, won all his matches in two sets and conceded only three games in the final. Joanna Lake had an interesting tussle with her close rival, Lani Ratana, in the girls’ open final, winning well after a sharp reverse in the opening set. Lake and Ratana won the girls' doubles, and the runner-up in the boys’ singles, Mathew. Granger, teamed with Hamish Jamieson to claim the boys’ doubles final. Results were— BOYS Open Singles—Quarter-finals: J. Brightwell beat M. Fox, 6-1, 6-4; G. Beattie beat T. Howe, 6-0, 6-2; H. Jamieson beat ■ Pita Brightwell, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1; M. Granger beat C.
