U.S. wins Cup tennis
NZPA-Reuter Tokyo The defending champions, the United States, yesterday emerged as the victor in the 1981 Federation Cup tennis tournament, when they won the two singles in the final against Britain for an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the best-of-three match. It was the United States’ sixth consecutive triumph in the tournament. They thus collected $50,000 in first prize money, and Britain, the fifth seed, won the runner-up prize of $25,000. • A total of 32 nations competed in the week-long
tournament, which carried prizes of $150,000. Andrea Jaeger, aged 16, ■ won the first singles, beating the 36-year-old Virginia Wade, 6-3, 6-1, in 79 minutes. The Wimbledon champion, Chris Evert Lloyd, clinched the title for the United States, outclassing Sue Barker 6-2, 6-1, in the second singles. The 26-year-old American superstar thus stretched her winning streak in the Federation Cup singles match to 23 without a single loss. The two countries are yet to play the doubles match, which is now a mere formality.
