Sumner stays ahead

At the end of round three of the Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association’s senior A competition, Sumner has taken an eight-point lead over its nearest rival, Merivale-Papanui.

In a close encounter at St James Park, Harewood edged ahead of Southern Districts to take the first innings points. Batting on, Southern Districts were dismissed for 196. Len Bielawski, who was 18 not out overnight, took his score to 34. For Harewood, Phil Blackler took four wickets and young Shane Garrick took three. In reply. Harewood reached 199 for nine with Steve Holden scoring 80 and Reg Hughes finishing with 42.

The fielding of the Southern Districts was outstanding with three excellent catches being held.

An outstanding innings of 96 by Dave Kennedy helped Upper Riccarton reach 183 for seven before, declaring with a first innings lead. The most successful bowler for Merivale-Papanui was Malcolm Leigh who finished with four wickets. In its second innings Merivale-Papanui did not bat well and only Charlie Reid with his 57 showed any resistance against the bowling of Upper Riccarton. At the end, Merivale-Papanui was 123 for nine with Wayne McWhirter having captured four of the wickets. Woolston W.M.C. had an easy win over Christchurch W.M.C. by an innings and 24 runs. Christchurch W.M.C. bettered its first innings effort by seven runs to score 71. Of these, W. McKeown scored 22. Ken Taylor bowled well for Woolston W.M.C.

to finish with six wickets for 21. In a game of fluctuating fortunes, Hoon Hay, which led on the first innings by 20 runs, could only muster 56 in its second innings. This dismal performance left Sumner with only 77 runs to get for victory. This was achieved for the loss of five wickets.
