School for demolition
The 77-year-old brick school for the deaf building at the foot of Evans Pass, Sumner, will be demolished. In the 19605, the Van Asch College building was ruled an earthquake risk in a report by the Ministry of Works, and it was recommended that the building be vacated by the mid-19705. For the last, four years only the kitchen has been used. A new kitchen block has now been completed, and the red brick landmark will come down in about a month. The school is now housed in modern buildings on the 9ha school site.
