Discussion of refuse scheme wanted
Recent setbacks encountered by the Christchurch Metropolitan Refuse Disposal Committee have prompted the Heathcote County Council to call for a * special meeting of the authorities involved in the scheme. This week the Refuse Disposal Committee scrapped plans to build a refuse transfer station in Redwood, and the proposed Waimairi landfill site was rejected by the Waimairi County Council. “It is very distressing to
read that ratepayers have spent millions of dollars, and there is talk of the scheme failing',” said Cr T. P. Wills. The council approved his motion that it call for a special meeting of mayors' and chairmen of local authorities in the scheme. The County Chairman. Mr W. M. Hindmarsh, said the refuse scheme could not go ahead without a landfill site. Cr M. C. C. Buchanan said three transfer sites might have been "unnecessary, un-
wise, and wasteful." Resource recovery could prove a money-saver if proper facilities were provided.
Cr M. J. Taylor said the .. council would have to look at f the cost of the refuse scheme to Heathcote ratepayers.
Pool fences
More muscle is being put into the council’s fight against uhfenced swimming pools. Cr Taylor is already looking into'.the possibility of a publicity programme to educate people about swimming pool safety. In addition, Cr O. T. Alpers' is drafting a bylaw requiring the homes of children under seven to have an enclosed play area. It was decided last evening that Crs Buchanan and Wills would also join the fray. Thev will draft a by-law-requiring the fencing of swimming pools. Slipway repairs The council will give about $7OO towards slipway repairs at the Sumner Lifeboat Institution. The money is the council’s share of the estimated $22,000 cost of repair work. Playing fields The council is short of playing fields for team games, according to the Recreation and Community Development Consultative Committee. It was decided that the council’s town-planning committee should look for spare land which could be used for playing fields. L.P.G. depot
Liquigas, Ltd, will seek planning permission for an L.P.G. depot in Woolston. Dates for the town-planning hearing, subject to confirmation by the parties involved, are December 7,8, and 9.
