European fare-rise
Air fares in Europe will rise 3 per cent from January 1 it has been announced at the annual meeting of the International Air Transport Association at Cannes. There will be some regional exceptions to the- over-all increase, the organisation's tariff coordination group told the meeting. A conference to try to set economic air fares on the North Atlantic will be held in December, the first such meeting in five years, said the association’s secre-tary-general (Mr Knut Hammarskjold). Main airlines had not made any profit on the route since 1970, arid I.A.T.A. specialists estimated that unfilled seats across the Atlantic equalled 56 empty Boeing 747 s each day.—Cannes.
