Salonen leads rally
NZPA-Reuter Abidjan Timo Salonen, of Finland, dominated the opening stage of the Ivory Coast car rally yesterday. The Datsun driver battled through heavy rain which turned the dirt roads into quagmires and finished the 1257 km section 27 minutes
ahead of the Toyota Celica of the Swede, Per Eklund. A local hope, Assef Samir, also in a Toyota, was third, a further 33 minutes back. Only 19 of the 51 starters completed the test, including the world rally championship leader, Guy Frequelin, of France, who finished eighth in a Peugeot 504.
