Badminton seeds fail
PA Auckland Two seeded players. Jacob van Seim (No. 6), of Wellington, and Nigel Skelt (8), of Southland, failed to survive the first day of play at the New Zealand badminton Championships at Auckland last, evening. Van Seim fell" to Peter Whiting, the Canterbury No. 2, in a closely contested second round men's singles. Whiting, who has been prominent in the game for several years, took a gruelling
struggle at 17-15 in the third game. The North Shore player Richard Kelly, downed Skelt in three games in a first round match, but he had no reserves in his next match against the Aucklander. Paul Kelly, and was quickly eliminated. The women's singles moved to the third round without any mishaps to the favoured players although the Canterbury hope.. Alison Ross, the eighth seed, withdrew at a late stage because of illness.
