Stolen cars recovered
Four’ stolen cars were recovered from the. Waimakariri riverbed,, on the Kaiapoi side, by the police yesterday afternoon.
A police spokesman said that the cars, all Fords — • “the early models that are easy to get into and drive away” — were driven off tracks' and into the river. Tow trucks were required to get them out. All the cars were extensively damaged, and wheels
were missing. They had been reported missing for between four days and , one day. The “rescue” took place about 3km from the motorway
bridge. Thieves on Monday night entered a Buckleys Road television shop through . the roof-and stole 11 video cassette recorders, valued at $30,000. Three shops' in Ferry Road — a hairdresser’s, a bookshop, and a tearooms — were also entered, and small amounts of cash taken.
