Policemen without numbers?
PA Palmerston North Two Palmerston North lawyers allegedly saw policemen not wearing their identification numbers while returning from guarding the Manawatu-Springbok rugby match from possible disruption last week-end.
The pair, who declined to be named, intend making a statement to the Manawatu District Law Society about their allegations although they have not indicated what they expect this to achieve.
The two lawyers were in the Palmerston North police station between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday and allegedly saw as many as 30 policemen without their numbers on their collars. According to one of the lawyers, the police were wearing tunics, not overcoats or raincoats. The Palmerston North
police district commander. Mr B. Kelly, has strenuously denied the allegations. ".A policeman will always wear a number. Because of problems which have arisen in the past, we emphasise to all staff that they must keep their numbers on." he said.
