Sir,—l hasten to inform one of your correspondents that New Zealand is not a banana republic but rather a banana colony. The English Queen is still our ruler and Head of State. Interestingly, while the United States celebrates its 205th independence year, New Zealand still celebrates February 6, Waitangi Day, when New Zealand became a colony. So obviously New Zealand still enjoys thinking it is a colony. Some people may think being a Dominion is being independent but this is a hoax. A Dominion really is a self-governing colony. New Zealand has never reached adulthood because of our de facto colonial status that still exists via the royal connection. Unlike the United States, New Zealand does not let its citizens pursue life, liberty and happiness as of right in case the majority party in Parliament loses any of its unlimited powers.— Yours, etc., I. G. ROBINSON. Motueka July 5. 1981.
