Canada geese
Sir.—We would like to endorse the comments of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society (July 24) about Canada geese in the South Island. But. of course, the geese typify the age-old story: if it eats grass, excretes on the paddock, and has no commercial value, then it is a noxious animal and must be eradicated. There is little doubt in our minds that the Canada goose in New Zealand has become one of the world's most abused and maligned forms of wildlife, simply because two or three farmers hate them. The Canada goose has been with us since the early 1900 s and, we feel, has as much right to be here as the people attempting to eradicate it. New Zealand's abuse of this species has not gone unnoticed overseas and only serves to depreciate our already very poor reputation in environmental matters.—Yours, etc.. F. N. HAYES, Director Ducks Unlimited (N.Z.). Inc.. Hamilton. July 31, 1981.
