Market forces ‘to set pay’
Parliamentary reporter
The National candidate for East Coast Bays (Dr. Don Brash) does not agree that rates of pay for workers under 18 years should be written into awards.
The National Party conference in Wellington strongly supported suggestions by the Minister of Labour (Mr Bolger) that special wage rates for yoiing unskilled workers should be written by legislation into awards to encourage employment of young people. During discussion of a remit asking the Government to begin talks with the Federation of Labour and the Employers’ Federation on realistic wage rates for workers under 20, Dr Brash said that award rates of pay for workers under 18 should be abolished and levels set by “market forces.” Mr Bolger had earlier said that he was considering introduction of legislation setting rates for young workers because he had failed to get union approval for the idea.
