Pirate FM station abandoned

PA Auckland After meeting the chairman of the Broadcasting Tribunal, Mr Bruce Slane, three North Shore FM enthusiasts have abandoned a plan to set up another pirate station. The group had intended to set up the pirate FM station to press the Government for a decision on whether to allow stereo radio.

A spokesman for the group, Mr Paul Burton, said that Mr Slane had said that any illegal broadcasts could harm the case for FM.

The Broadcasting Tribunal is still preparing its report on FM after a three-month hearing which finished last month.

The report will be presented to the Minister of Broadcasting (Mr Cooper) who will make a decision on the introduction of FM. Mr Burton said that if no progress had been made in the next two months, his group would once again look at taking to the air-waves to try to force a decision.
