Canty rugby changes
Several changes, both forced and unforced, have been made to the Canterbury rugby team for its match against South Canterbury at Timaru tomorrow. The half-back combination will be different from that which played in Canterbury's previous match, against Mid-Canterbury last week at Ashburton. Rod Latham will come in for Wayne Smith, who was injured in club football last Saturday, at first five-eighths, and Gary Barkle has replaced Steve Scott. Peter McLaren has influenza and his place at No. 8 will be taken by Dale Atkins. Jock Hobbs will have his first representative match since playing against Scotland, coming in for John Masefield on the flank. Mike Fransen will lock the
scrum with Albert Anderson, as Graeme Higginson is unavailable. It will be Fransen’s first full representative appearance. Mick Powley will take Jed Williams’ place as hooker. Two forwards were ruled out of contention through injury — David White and John Ashworth, with an injured ankle and a poisoned leg respectively. The team is: Robbie Deans, Brett Oetgen, Ricky Allen, Mark Mclntosh; Kieran Keane, Rod Latham; Gary Barkle; Dale Atkins; Don Hayes (captain), Albert Anderson, Mike Fransen, Jock Hobbs; Bill Bush, Mick Powley, Pat O’Byrne. Reserves: Steve Scott, Craig Green, Vic Simpson, Jed Williams. John Masefield and one to be named.
