Ursula Cross, the diminutive Auckland backstroker. burst into world rankings at the Industry Hills swimming carnival near Los Angeles yesterday. Miss Cross won the 100 m backstroke final in a New Zealand record, Imin 5.55, breaking her own record set at the New Zealand Games in January by 0.555. It was Miss Cross’s second gold medal at the carnival attended by a New Zealand team and a team from the Wharenui club in Christchurch. On Friday she won the 200 m backstroke.

The 100 m time gave Miss Cross 22nd ranking in the world this year and third fastest time in the Commonwealth.

Her swim was the highlight of the final day for the New Zealanders in which a number of personal best times were again set.

Two Christchurch swimmers, Grant Forbes and Kim Dewar, recorded personal bests in the 200 m breaststroke. Forbes won the men’s consolation final in 2min 28.275. He has improved his time for the event by five secs on the two-week tour. Miss Dewar was third in the women’s 200 m final, in 2min 43.635.

Michael Davidson (Auckland), a member of the New Zealand

team, was seventh in the 1500 m freestyle final, in I6min 16.555., his best for the distance. Other personal bests were recorded by Kara Taumaunu (Canterbury) in the 100 and 200 m backstroke (Imin 1.37 s and 2min 10.51 s respectively); Miss Dewar in the 200 m individual ■ medley (2min 28.685) and 100 m breaststroke (Imin 17.395); Grant Gillard (Wharenui), equalled his 100 m backstroke best (Imin 2,05) and bettered his 200 m time (2min 13.255); ' Michael Smith (Wharenui), 200 m butterfly (2min ,6.555).

A composite New Zealand — Wharenui women's medley relay team featured in an exciting final race, the New Zealanders being narrowly beaten by a strong Mission Viejo team. The time for the New Zealand girls was 4min 30.25.

Other times recorded by New Zealanders were: Monique Rodahl (Auckland) Imin 7.16 s in the 100 m backstroke, and 2min 28.03 s in the 200 m individual medley; Megan Tohill (Otago) Imin 3.8 s in the 100 m butterfly, and 2min 20.90 s in the 200 m butterfly; Mark Kalaugher (Auckland) 2min 29.20 s and Brett Austin (Auckland) 2min 30.255, both in the 200 m breaststroke.
