‘Odyssey’ to help addicts

PA Wellington The "Odyssey House” method, a scheme to rehabilitate drug addicts and alcoholics. has the blessing of the New Zealand Government. The Odyssey House Trust has announced that it has authority to use a Government building in Auckland to house up to 40 addicts, who will qualify for an additional sickness benefit towards treatment costs while receiving treatment.

The ‘‘Odyssey House” programme, which was started in the United States about 17 years ago by Dr Judianne Densen-Gerber. is a drugfree rehabilitation programme for drug addicts and alcoholics. Dr Densen-Gerber claims an 80 per cent success rate if a person stays with the programme for six months, and a 98 per cent success rate if he lasts 18 months. The Odyssey House Trust

says it has official sanction after meetings with the Minister of Health and Social Welfare (Mr Gair), the Minister of Justice (Mr McLay) and the chairman of the Government caucus committee on the misuse of drugs (Mr G. W. F. Thompson). Mrs Barbara Goodman, the chairperson of the Odyssey House Trust in New Zealand, said she hoped the Odyssey House would open in Auckland before the end of the year.
