Obituary Mr D. O. Whyte

PA • Wellington A prominent figure in banking, commerce and sport, Mr Douglas Ogilvie Whyte, of Paraparaumu, has died, aged 80. Mr Whyte was a former chairman of the Bank of New Zealand and of the Golden Bay Cement Company. He was also a leading golf and badminton administrator, as well as an active player. Mr Whyte was born in Dunedin and educated at Christ's College. He joined the Golden Bay Cement Company in- the early 1920 s and became its general manager and chairman. He was a founder member of the New Zealand Portland Cement Association and an executive member of the Associated Chambers of Commerce. In 1962 he was awarded the C.B.E. for his services to

commerce and as a sports administrator. He was chairman of the Bank of New Zealand from 1969 to 1975 when the decision was taken to build the new head office in Willis Street. Mr Whyte did much to encourage the introduction of sponsored circuit golf in New Zealand and was manager of the New Zealand team in the 1960 Eisenhower Trophy. He was a former president of the Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club and of the New Zealand Golf Association. In badminton, the Whyte Cup, competed for annually by New Zealand and Australia. was presented by Mr and Mrs Whyte. Mr Whyte was chairman of the Wellington division of the National Party from 1947 to 1955. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
