New Brighton and Western advanced to the next round of the Adidas Chatham Cup soccer competition with contrasting wins in Christchurch on Saturday

New Brighton beat the Hertz League leader. Cashmere-Wand-erers. 1-0, at English Park, with a goal by Evan Johnston, against the run of play, in the twentysecond minute.

IL survived strong pressure from Cashmere and held on to win deservedly. Towards the end. the match degenerated into a kick and chase exercise but Brighton could have wrapped up the match 17 minutes from the end. Johnston broke through the Cashmere defence but his shot was well blocked by Steve Reeves, Cashmere’s goa’l-keeper.

Cashmere almost forced extra time when Wayne Bath’s fine header flew narrowly past the post 10 minutes from the end. Western was untroubled to beat Shamrock, 3-0, at MacFarlane Park. It scored twice in the first half through Phil Ayers and Eric Reiser. The second was a penalty after Ayers had been brought down in the penalty area.

Murray South made certain of victory with the final goal midway through the second half, against a disappointing Shamrock team.

A goal by David Banks six minutes before half-time was enough to give Nomads United a 1-0 win over Technical in a league match at Ensors Road.

The win lifts Nomads to second place, behind Cashmere on goal difference. Halswell United went to Timaru and returned with two points after beating Northern Hearts. 2-1. Three further league matches will be played today. Cashmere will meet ’Burndale United at Somerfield ’ Park: Nomads will play Halswell at Tulett Park; and Hearts will meet Western in Timaru. » ■.
