Malaysian students

Sir,—The Government has decided to impose a $l5OO fee on private overseas students and presumably it has good reasons. What are they? It would be helpful if the Govern‘ment would make as clear a statement as have Messrs Tan and Yeow. The full subtleties of the English language have evidently not as yet been mastered by the spokesmen of the Malaysian students. I did not state that the Malaysian students had a racist attitude, but that “on the face of 1 it” such might be construed by the superficial observer from the remark of a Malaysian student. University education is a very costly privilege, and every student attending is subsidised by the taxpayer, whether he be fee-paying or not. I do not begrudge the cost to the taxpayer. as it is an investment in the future. Mr Yeow states that 40 per cent of the population of Malaysia live below the poverty line: in Africa and India children exist below the star-

vation line, yet we see few from these countries in our universities.—Yours, etc., SUZANNE STARKY. May 22, 1981.
