Push for Japanese tourists

PA Wellington The Government is stepping up its efforts to boost tourist traffic from Japan. Speaking to a seminar on tourism organised by the Japan Advisory Committee in Wellington, the Minister of Tourism (Mr Quigley) said an additional Tourist' Department officer had been appointed to Tokyo and the advertising budget had been increased. The tourist office had been resited in a more central area of Tokyo and several New Zealand companies had established their own representation. "A solid base for expansion has been established,” Mr Quigley said. Visitor arrivals from Japan had passed the 20.000 mark, an increase of 22.-8 per cent over the previous year. The Japanese market * had responded well to the introduction of direct air services.
