‘Alternatives’ courses again

Courses in employment “alternatives” will again be offered at the Christchurch Polytechnic this term. More than 170 people attended a class earlier this year which covered aspects of self-employment and the setting up of co-operatives. Because of the interest, three courses were held at the Polytechnic, and all were well-attended. The organisers, Mr C. W. Jeffery and Ms R. Miller, have decided to repeat the experiment. Beginning in June, "starting out” courses

will be offered in self-em-ployment, organisational skills for co-operatives, and cottage industry business skills. To help “those on the dole" or “with time to burn,” Mr Jeffery and Ms Miller are also compiling a register of local people involved in cottage industries, a list of craft outlets, and related information such as the assistance available from local authorities, other sources of finance, and the regulations likely to be encountered in any venture.
