Increase in war pensions

PA Wellington War disablement pensions, war widows’ pensions, and several war pension allowances have been increased.

Announcing the rises, the Acting Minister in charge of War Pensions (Mr Gair) said they would be backdated to April 1.

The increases are based on a 15.23 per cent rise in the consumers price index between April 1, 1980, and March 31, 1981. Mr Gair said the war disablement pension for total disablement would now be $50.96 a week, an increase of $6.74. There would be proportionate increases for lesser degrees of disablement.

The additional war pension, which may be paid in certain cases of severe disablement, has risen by $4.04 to $30.58. The maximum rate of war widows’ pension has increased from $32.62 a week to $37.59. Attendants’ allowance rates have increased from $81.92 a week to $94.40, and travelling allowances have increased from $5.33 a week to $6.15. There have also been increases in clothing allowances.

The increase, including the arrears from April 1, will be paid on June 30.

Mr Gair said that the next adjustment to Social Security benefits and war pensions would be announced in July.
