Top teams in volleyball
Leading teams from Wellington and the South Island will compete in the annual invitation Canterbury University vollevball tournamerit in the University gymnasium today and tomorrow. Two Wellington sides. Rongotai and Eagles, both strong in depth and experience, and Canterbury University should dominate the men’s competition. The students are struggling to recapture their best form, but have a powerful attack, spearheaded by Gilbert Enoka and Paul Bell.’ The Christchurch team. Smash, and Trafalgar (Nelson), have the ability to upset the fancied teams.
Competition should be keen in the women's event where University A, which has been the dominant team in recent years, faces a strong challenge' from Eagles (Wellington). Eagles has a national squad member, Margaret Rackley, to lead its attack and University will depend on the skilful Jane Williams and Megan Ryde. In the other section, the two main contenders for the play-off should be the young Trafalgar team and Otago University, which has the services of two national squad players. Ness Benacek and Debbie Thomas.
