Mr Montrose Roy (Monty) Kerr, a prominent trainer and driver in the 19605, has died in Auckland. He was aged 57. , Mr Kerr failed by only one point to win the trainers’ premiership in the 195960 season. He was sixth in the following season and seventh in 1961-62.

He was originally a jockey, being apprenticed to the late Jim Buchanan and later riding with some success over fences.

After switching to trotting, he was private trainer to Mr Noel Taylor- for three years. He then trained on his own account for a few years before accepting a position as the late Dr John Sullivan’s private trainer. Although he never had an Outstanding horse, Mr Kerr prepared some good pacers and trotters. Among them were Foretell, Fire Streak, Anton, Knock Out and Danger Man. He gave up training about 10 years ago but continued to take a keen interest in trotting, especially on the breeding side. Mr Kerr, who had, been ill for several months, is survived by his wife, three • sons and three daughters.
