Maoris asked to decline honours
PA Hamilton No Maoris will receive Queen's Birthday honours this year if the Mana Motuhake movement has its way. Its president, Mr Matiu Rata, said Maoris were being asked to decline any honours until the Treaty of Waitangi was ratified and honoured in law r . But no action would be taken against anyone who chose to accept, he said. A prominent supporter of
Mana Motuhake in Wellington, Professor Sidney Mead, of Victoria Universityls Maori and anthropology department, said it had not occurred to him to produce an alternative Maori honours list as he had at New Year. But he would probably do so again for January 1 next year, he said. He was trying to make the point that the official Honours List took no notice of the kinds of things people did for Maori causes, he said.
