Mr Tauroa to visit Soweto
PA Auckland The Race Relations Conciliator, Mr Hiwi Tauroa, says he intends to visit Sow-eto, some of the Bantustans, and talk to the controversial black Church leader, Bishop Desmond Tutu, during his trip to South Africa next month. His trip is now almost a certainty, Mr Tauroa being confident leave can be arranged for a fortnight’s visit. He said in Auckland yesterday that he would like to see such places as Soweto, and said that he had made a list of persons he wanted to see in South Africa. Mr Tauroa was invited to
South Africa, through the South African Rugby Board, to coach black and Coloured rugby players. He said yesterday that part of the reason for going was because during the heated Springbok tour debate he often found himself between pro-tour and antitour pressure groups without knowing enough about South Africa. “I am going to be a lot wiser when I come back. You will have a more informed conciliator who will have seen things for himself, he said. Mr Tauroa said he would not be going as an “honorary white,” but as a Maori.
