Changes in stallion ranks in Canterbury

Many new stallions will be available to standardbred breeders in Canterbury in the coming season. In addition, a number of stallions have had a change of location.

The 1976 New Zealand Cup winner, Stanley Rio, is back in Canterbury an.- will stand at a stud being established on the Yaldhurst property where he was trained for a most successful race career by George Noble.

The Willomere Stud of Doody and Kevin Townley will have three new stallions next spring. They are Rum Customer, a millionaire stake-winner, the Americanbred horse, Call Back, and the French-bred horse, Iguassou.

The ..tud will continue to stand Beau Nonantais and Willie Win.

Both Rum Customer and Iguassou have done stud duty this season in the Auckland area.

The Dominion Handicap winner, Alias Armbro, after two seasons with his former trainer, Brian Gliddon at

Burnham, will be located at Bevan Heron’s property near Rangiora. The outstanding performer, Master Dean, after a period in Southland, is to join Royal Delivery at the Tai Tapu stud of G. and J. Tate.

Mark Lobell, which spent some time in Canterbury several y.ars ago, but more recently has been with Doug Grantham at Auckland, is now being looked after by Neville Benny at Springston. Mark Lobell’s progeny have done particularly well in New Zealand and Australia and include the Inter-Domi-nion Championship Grand Final winner, Markovina. Nevele R. Stud, Prebbleton, will have a new horse, Besta Fella, next season, while two of their other horses have gone south. Midshipman has been leased to Grant Sim at Invercargill, while Gerry . Mir will also stand near Invercargill on a property owned by Ray Souness. Call Back has ; vned Out

to Win and Colonel Kenton at Jim Dalgety’s Lantana Lodge, West Melton. The Great Northern Derby and Auckland Cup winner, Bolton Byrd, also owned by Dalgety, is to return south and stand at Kelvin Steven’s property near Rangiora. Locarno is creating much interest since Robin Butt’s announcement last week th.-.t he would be available for a light stud season, and it seems certain he will be well supported. Trowbridge is to stand at Frank Bebbington’s property near Ashburton alongside the New Zealand bred horse, Graduand.

Saigon is a newcomer to John Scott’s Willowby property, while the Roydon Lodge Stud-owner stallion, Meddlesome, is to go to Lauder to the stud operated by Murray Hamilton. Other changes in the stud complement in Canterbury are imminent and there could be one of the largest influxes of newcomers among the stallions in recent years.
