Hutt grade eased.
The last major upgrading work on the Mount Hutt road was carried out during the summer, on the first 3km. About 30,000 cubic metres of material was moved in the operation to ease the grade and widen this narrow portion of the road to two lanes. The chairman of the Mount Hutt Ski Company (Mr Peter Yeoman) says tha’t
work on the road, under the supervision of the Forest Service, cost more than 5100,000, with the excavated material being used to lift the carriage-way about a metre in some places. This part of the road was the steepest section of the 11km access road and the easier grade will make a considerable difference to buses.
